Heckington Windmill

The Project

The resulting 5.46 kWp solar PV system uses 12 AIKO Neostar 2S 455W panels with a SolarEdge three-phase inverter and individual power optimisers. The south-west-facing roof provides a productive location for renewable electricity generation while respecting the visual importance of the surrounding heritage environment.

Greenio designed a heritage-sensitive solar PV installation for Heckington Windmill in Lincolnshire, introducing modern renewable energy technology to one of the county’s distinctive historic sites. Rather than installing panels on the windmill itself, Greenio identified a suitable ancillary building where solar generation could be introduced without detracting from the character of the landmark.

The Customer

High-efficiency solar panels were selected to maximise output from the available roof area, while SolarEdge optimisation provided an appropriately engineered solution for the site. The result demonstrates how renewable energy can be incorporated carefully into heritage and community assets.

The priority was to introduce solar energy in a way that was practical, productive and sympathetic to the historic setting. Greenio assessed the wider site rather than focusing solely on the principal building, identifying an alternative roof that could deliver useful solar generation without compromising the appearance of the windmill.

The Customer Said...

We were keen to bring solar into the site, but it had to be done sensitively. The solution feels right for the surroundings and, best of all, the electricity it produces is now helping us with the day-to-day running of the site.

Where Are They Now

The system was designed to generate approximately 4,636 kWh of renewable electricity each year and reduce carbon emissions by around 960 kg CO2 annually.

That electricity now has a particularly fitting use: solar energy generated on site helps power the milling of flour. For a landmark that has historically harnessed wind power, the addition of solar PV provides a modern continuation of renewable energy supporting the site’s operation.
