Air Source Heat Pump
Overview
Air source heat pumps extract low-grade heat from the outside air and upgrade it to provide heating and hot water for your property. The captured heat is used to supply hot water cylinders, radiators or underfloor heating systems, delivering an efficient, low-carbon alternative to traditional heating methods.
Air source heat pumps are particularly well suited to well-insulated homes and buildings and are a popular choice for new-build developments, self-build projects and modern commercial properties. They integrate especially well with underfloor heating systems, which operate at lower temperatures and maximise overall efficiency. When correctly designed and specified, an air source heat pump can comfortably provide year-round heating and hot water.
The performance and reliability of air source heat pumps can vary significantly between manufacturers and system designs. That’s why Greenio only installs proven, high-quality systems backed by strong manufacturer warranties. Combined with our expert system design, professional installation and commissioning, you can be confident your heat pump will deliver reliable performance, long-term efficiency and genuine carbon and cost savings.

How Do ASHPs Work?
Step 1- Evaporation
Energy is absorbed from the outside air by the heat pump’s fan, which draws air across a heat exchanger (the evaporator). Inside this heat exchanger is a liquid refrigerant. As the ambient heat from the air passes over the exchanger, the refrigerant absorbs this energy and begins to warm up, changing from a liquid into a vapour.
Step 2- Compression
The warmed refrigerant vapour is then passed into an electrically driven compressor. The compressor increases the pressure of the refrigerant, which significantly raises its temperature, making it hot enough to be used for heating and hot water.
Step 3- Condensation
The hot refrigerant flows through a condenser, where the heat is transferred into the water used by your heating and hot water system. As the heat is released, the refrigerant cools and condenses back into a liquid.
Step 4- Expansion
The cooled refrigerant passes through an expansion valve, where its pressure is reduced. This prepares it to absorb heat again, allowing the cycle to repeat continuously and efficiently.

Benefits of Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs)
Reduced carbon footprint
Air source heat pumps are a low-carbon, environmentally friendly heating solution. By extracting renewable heat from the air and using electricity rather than fossil fuels, they significantly reduce carbon emissions and support the transition to cleaner energy.

High efficiency
ASHPs are highly efficient systems. For every 1kW of electricity used to power the heat pump, they can typically deliver 3–4kW of heat energy. This high efficiency helps reduce energy consumption and running costs compared with traditional heating systems.

Heating and cooling capability
In addition to providing space heating and hot water, many air source heat pump systems can also offer active cooling. This can remove the need for a separate air conditioning system, saving space, installation time and overall cost.

Minimal outdoor space required
Air source heat pumps require only a small external unit, making them suitable for most properties, including urban homes and commercial buildings where outdoor space may be limited.

Long lifespan and low maintenance
ASHPs are relatively quick to install, require minimal ongoing maintenance and typically have a lifespan of around 20 years. This makes them a reliable long-term investment for both homeowners and businesses.

Improved safety
Unlike gas or oil heating systems, air source heat pumps are combustion-free and powered entirely by electricity. This removes risks associated with fuel storage, flues and carbon monoxide, making them a safer heating option.
Air Source Heat Pump – Frequently Asked Questions
Will an air source heat pump work with my existing radiators?
Yes. Air source heat pumps can often be connected to existing radiators, underfloor heating systems and hot water cylinders. As part of Greenio’s site survey, we will assess your current heating system to confirm compatibility and advise if any upgrades are required to ensure optimal performance.

Are air source heat pumps noisy?
Modern air source heat pumps are designed to operate quietly and fall within permitted development noise limits. When correctly specified and installed, they produce sound levels comparable to everyday household appliances and are unlikely to cause disturbance.

What is the expected lifespan of an air source heat pump?
Air source heat pumps are built for long-term use. On average, a well-maintained system has a lifespan of 20 years or more, making it a durable and reliable heating solution.

What happens to my oil tank?
Once an air source heat pump is installed, oil is no longer required for heating. This means your oil tank can be safely decommissioned and removed if desired, freeing up space and eliminating the need for fuel deliveries.

What additional benefits come with installing an ASHP?
With an air source heat pump, there is no need for:
-
A flue
-
An oil tank
-
A gas supply or fuel storage
You also avoid the need to pay upfront for fuel deliveries, helping improve safety, convenience and cash flow.

Does an air source heat pump require maintenance?
Air source heat pumps require relatively little maintenance. Simple tasks such as keeping the outdoor unit clean and free from debris can be carried out by the property owner. In addition, it is recommended that the system is professionally serviced once a year to ensure efficient, reliable operation.
