EV Chargers

EV Charging Overview

Although the upfront cost of an electric vehicle is often higher, EVs can be cheaper to run, due to the lower cost of electricity compared to petrol or diesel. Recharging at home (overnight) will normally result in the greatest cost savings. Chargepoints can be installed in homes with a garage or driveway, at workplaces, on residential streets, in town centres, public car parks and at destinations, such as shopping centres or motorway service stations.

Types of charge points

Slow chargepoints (3KW)

Slow charge points are often the cheapest to use and are suitable when vehicles are parked for several hours, such as during working hours or overnight.

Fast chargepoints (7KW-22KW)

Fast charge points ideal when vehicles are parked for a few hours or as a fast overnight solution. Fast chargepoints are perfect for home installations. 7kw chargers are for properties single phase electrical supply, most uk homes have single phase supply so will require a 7kw charger. 22kw is for properties with 3 phase supply so its beneficial to know what supply your property has. If you are not sure which supply you have Greenio will be happy to assist accordingly during the quote process.

Rapid chargepoints (50KW+)

Rapid chargepoints are the quickest way to recharge a vehicle,

typically recharging a vehicle to 80% in around 30 minutes. However, rapid charge points can be the most expensive to use and they cannot be installed at home.

Benefits of Installing an EV Charger

Cost Effective

Charging your Electric car from home is generally far cheaper than charging your car at Rapid Charge points at the service station. The average cost to fully charge your car is just over £3. For example, to fully charge a 30kWh Nissan LEAF overnight will cost about £3.96. Whereas, if you were to use a rapid charging point, typically found at service stations, it generally costs about £6.50 for a 30-minute charge.

Convenience

Having an EV charger installed at home is far more convenient and time effective than relying on public use chargers.

Faster

Home chargers are generally much faster than regular public EV chargers. Depending on the size of the EV charger, your car can be fully charged in as little as one hour. This means you could be on the road with a fully charged battery much quicker than if you were to use a public charger, unless you were to use a rapid charger which are not cheap to use!

Property Value

Every year more people have chosen to swap their petrol or diesel vehicle for an electric or hybrid vehicle, which means the demand for charging points becomes higher. Having an electric vehicle charging point installed at your home could add value to your property, thereby making your property more attractive to potential buyers if you choose to sell. If you do decide to move, Greenio offer a relocation service to move your EV charger to your new address so you’ll have peace of mind knowing you will get the same professional service & installation that you had before.

FAQs

How long does it take for a a full charge?

It depends on the battery size in your car and the power of your charge point. Typically plug-in hybrids (e.g. Golf GTE, Prius) charge at a rate of 3.7kW, fully charging within 3 hours. Fully electric cars (e.g. Tesla) can charge at 7.4kW on a single phase supply but have a much bigger battery, a 75kWh Tesla Model S would take 10 hours to fully charge. A 3.7kW charge charges at a rate of approximately 12mph, a 7.4kW charge would charge at a rate of approximately 24mph.

How often do you have to charge an electric car?

Compared to a petrol or diesel vehicle, which only needs a refill every few weeks, a question many new EV drivers have is how often they will need to charge their car. As with the previous questions, the answer depends greatly on your driving habits and car’s range.

Can i charge my EV for free from my solar panels?

Yes, there are a couple of ways to do this. One is to use the dedicated Zappi charger, which diverts excess generation into an electric vehicle. In this way, what would have been exported back to the grid is now providing you with zero-carbon mobility. However, you would need to have your EV parked up at home during the day. The alternative is to use a battery system to store this energy, and then discharge this into your EV in the evening/night-time.

How long do EV Chargers take to be installed?

Greenio can typically install your new EV Charger in half a day. If your fuse box is far from the charge point location or cables need to be run through internal rooms, the installation may take a little longer.

Whats the difference between tethered and untethered EV Chargers?

  • A tethered chargers cable is is permanently attached to the charger.

  • Untethered chargers do not come with a cable attached as standard therefore have to be bought separately.

Where can I install an electric vehicle charger?

EV chargers are weatherproof so people typically can install them on their sides of their homes, inside a garage or on the driveway. Given that most EV charging cables are between 5 and 10m long, you need to consider where you park most regularly.
